We're delighted to be able to pre-announce the UK release of version 4.0 of the MacKichan family of programs: Scientific Word, Scientific WorkPlace and Scientific Notebook (the announcement from MacKichan Software is appended below). We are especially pleased with three points in particular:

  1. Despite the many improvements to the programs and the additional manuals referred to below (including the much-requested "Gallery of Document Shells"), the pricing structure for version 4.0 will be identical with that for v3.5. This means you can continue to use the v3.5 Licence Calculator at www.sciword.demon.co.uk/v3-5.htm to determine pricing
  2. Everyone who bought a new v3.5 system (not upgrades from earlier versions) after 1st. October 2001 will receive a complimentary upgrade to v4.0
  3. We're still in discussion with MacKichan Software about this one - but it seems that those users who bought the optional British English spell checker for v3.5 will be able to use the same dictionary serial number with their upgrade to v4.0

The projected timing for the UK release is as follows:

  1. A postal mailing to confirm this Email and give further information will go out by next Friday 11th. January
  2. Version 4.0 stock should arrive here by Friday 18th. January
  3. UK shipments to begin in the week of 21st. January. These will be despatched in the following order of priority:

May we suggest the easiest way to place an upgrade order is to complete the on-line Licence Calculator form (clicking on "Upgrade" and including your v3.5 Serial Number, leaving the Dictionary option on "No") and print it out. Then submit the order on-line and send payment, either electronically to our bank account or by cheque with the printout for reference. Please note our new address in East Lothian, as from August 2001 (see the web site: MoreOptions - CompanyDetails). Cheques will not be banked until systems are despatched.

    In writing now we'd also like to draw your attention to our Scientific Word/WorkPlace 2002 Training Courses, as detailed on our web site at www.sciword.demon.co.uk/training.htm . If you've ever struggled with getting the program to do what you want, or you suspect the system is capable of so much more if only you knew how, then professional training could be just what you need. Why not discuss the possibility with your colleagues and see if you can get a group of 3 or 4 together for either the Standard Two-Day Course or the fast-moving Graduates' One-Day Course? We'd love to hear from you, and talk over the options with you.
