1. Version 6.0.18:    Changes in v6.0.18 include:
   • Several changes to improve Undo in mathematics
   • Fixed a problem when the default document directory was specified in the preferences dialog
   • Fixed a problem where lines did not appear when using direct print
   • Fixed a problem where all plots were not being printed in certain documents
   • When using Scientific Word, fix a problem that prevented using direct print
   • Fixed a problem on import where a space was added before certain accented characters
   • Updated the shell American_Economic_Review--Similar to compile with xelatex, to avoid a LaTeX error when using pdflatex
   • Fixed a problem on import where "amp;" would appear at the beginning of cells of a matrix
   • Changed the command file used to call Inkscape so it will be correct for 32-bit versions of Windows
   • On the File menu, moved Recent Files to follow New Document and Open File
   • Changed the context menu for Fragments sidebar to say "Create fragment from clipboard" instead of "Paste"
   • Fixed .bmp to .png graphics conversion
   • Fixed a problem where keyboard shortcuts for copy, cut, and paste would not work in certain text fields in dialog boxes
   • Fixed a problem with the cursor position when the cursor is in a superscript and the right arrow is pressed
   • Fixed a problem on import where a capital D followed by a subscript was translated to a blackboard bold D
   • Fixed a problem where the BIBINPUTS directory was not being found, used by BibTeX
   • Fixed problems with revising bibliography and citation tags
   • Fixed a problem with the modification count on saving, correcting a problem where a previously saved PDF file was displayed that did not include the newest changes to the document
   • Fixed a problem on import when an encapsulated TeX field included a backslash in the name field
   • Fixed problems importing found in certain specific documents
   • Fixed a problem importing when using the setspace package
   • Fixed a problem where modifying the source view would not mark the document as modified after returning to normal view
   • Fixed a problem where texhash was not run after product install without installing TeX Live
   
   As a result of the highlighted line, BibTeX now works correctly with v6.0.18 as follows:
   • If the .bib file is placed in the C:\texlive\2016\texmf-dist\bibtex\bib folder, then you should leave the entry in the Tools – Preferences – Typesetting – General dialog blank. Note: this might mean deleting existing/default entries
   • If you place the .bib file anywhere else, then point to this location from the dialog.



2. Version 6.0.17:    The change in v6.0.17 was:
   • Fixed a problem importing .tex files where graphics were not correctly imported.



3. Windows 10:    We have recently spent some time testing both versions 5.5 and 6.0 of our software with Windows 10, and have updated our installation instructions for v5.5 and v6.0 accordingly. Further to our June 2016 mailing (Item 6):
   • Version 5.5: At Step 3 of our v5.5 installation instructions you should use your v5.5 program serial number if you wish to retain access to a British English dictionary you previously had associated with your program (and be sure to follow our February 2014 mailing Item 2). If you use your v6.0 program serial number you will lose access to the additional British English dictionary.
     Our own experience of installating v5.5 under Windows 10 was straight-forward, although the TrueTeX installation did sit for a few minutes looking like it wasn’t doing anything; there is a notification on the screen at that point saying “Installing the TrueTeX TeX system. This process will take a few minutes”. However, one of the developers responded to us saying they have

     ...had several customers call where the install hangs during the TrueTeX portion. Some customers have success in turning off the anti-virus and installing. What seems reliable when this happens is to do the safe mode installation

     as mentioned in our June 2016 mailing (Item 6).
   
   
   • Version 6.0: Again, we had no problems when following the v6.0 installation instructions, but note the possible work-arounds mentioned at Step 3.



4. Changing the page layout:    It's easy with version 6.0 to change aspects of the document's appearance as follows:
   • Orientation
     1. for Scientific Word/WorkPlace:
        • To change the whole of a document to landscape, click on Typeset – Document Format – General – Enable overriding the document style – Basic layout – Page Orientation – Landscape, before clicking on OK
        • To switch to landscape part way through a document, insert an Encapsulated TeX field (Insert – Typeset Object – TeX field) saying \begin{landscape}, and in the "Requires Package" box enter lscape. Then at the place you want to revert to Portrait, insert an Encapsulated TeX field saying \end{landscape}. We've put a sample of this here: landscapesample.sci and landscapesample.pdf
     2. for Scientific Notebook: click on File – Page Setup – Format & Options, and select Landscape as the orientation
     
     
   • Margins
     1. for Scientific Word/WorkPlace: click on Typeset – Document Format – Page Layout – Enable overriding page layout, and then go down to the Body and Margins dialogs (at the bottom) to enter the numbers you want, before clicking on OK.
        Actually, rather than entering numbers, it's easier to use the left and right arrows to adjust Body Width and Left Margin, and the up and down arrows to adjust Body Height and Top Margin
     2. for Scientific Notebook: click on File – Page Setup – Margins & Header/Footer, and enter the margin dimensions you want in millimetres

5. Amazon:    Wherever you are in the world, you're probably not too far from Amazon. And we guess you buy lots of your stuff there. Everybody does.

6. Cube roots:    One of our users from Romania who had recently upgraded to v6.0 Emailed to say:

   I am writing to inform you that, it seems that in SWP 6.0 is not implemented the real function radical of order n (n integer more greater than 2). In SWP 5.5 this function is defined.

   In our response we said:

   Thanks for your Email – good to hear from you. Here’s what you need to do:

   1. Enter the radical
   2. Right-click on it and select Properties – Radical Properties
   3. Choose the second option.

   We agree it's a confusing change for people well-acquainted with the v5.5 interface. Hopefully this note will save you a few minutes hunting around! [See the video here.]



7. Split-the-Difference pricing:    We mentioned last time (Item 5) that we were temporarily cushioning the price increase brought about by the weakening of the pound post-Referendum.
   We're also introducing a Split-the-Difference pricing policy to benefit continuing customers. For Annual Maintenance sites in the UK, where the licence is priced in US dollars but charged in pounds – or for sites in Europe where our Training Courses are priced in pounds but charged in Euros – there’s a vulnerability to the exchange rate fluctuations. This has been particularly acute since the Brexit Referendum.
   Our new Split-the-Difference policy, designed to reward our repeat customers, says that where the exchange rate has moved against the customer since the previous year’s Annual Maintenance renewal (or previous year’s Training Courses) we will split the difference with them between what they paid last year and what it should be this year. If the exchange rate has moved in their favour, they pay the new lower price.



8. GoToMyPC:    We've had a GoToMyPC account for about 12 years now, providing secure remote access to our computers from any online computer in the world. We use it several times a week.
   On a couple of occasions recently, we've suggested particular customers might want to install the free 30-day trial of GoToMyPC so that we can sort out their Tech. Support issues by logging on to their machine remotely. This works extremely well, not least because we're very familiar with the interface already.
